Many Southwest Florida customers of Summit Broadband, which provides internet, TV and phone service, lost service late Monday after the company said it suffered “a series of multiple, unrelated fiber cuts” on its network.

Summit didn’t provide additional details on the damage including what or who caused it but said “multiple teams are working to repair these issues as quickly as possible, and we anticipate services will be restored in a phased fashion."

The interruption even knocked out the website for company, which serves a large area of Collier and Lee counties, plus Central Florida.

The situation was only made the more difficult for those who are using the web to work from home these days in larger numbers because of what is happening around the world with COVID-19.

“This is quite possibly the worst timing that this could have happened,” said one reader, who only identified himself as Steven on Twitter. “I am required to work from home during the virus. How am I supposed to earn a paycheck? Wow, I cannot believe this.”

Added another resident, who goes by Crispatrice: “Considering, what’s going on in the world, Wi-Fi is very important at this moment.”

A few Naples residents said later Monday night that some of their services were beginning to resume.
